The Light of Life

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12 (NKJV)
A while ago, my husband and I were walking along one of the many beautiful beaches in the coastal city that we are privileged to call home. As we enjoyed our walk, we had a front-row seat to a spectacular rainbow forming on the opposite side of the bay where it had just rained. What an awesome sight that was!
A rainbow is formed when sunlight hits a water droplet. When this happens, the sunlight is refracted or bent, as it passes through something denser than air, like a water droplet. The light then bounces off the back of the droplet and bends again as it exits. When sunlight bends, it splits into the colours we see in a rainbow.
Light To Our Weary Souls
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 (NKJV)
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, He says that we are the light of the world. Our light, He says, should not be hidden, but on display for others to see. The light of Jesus can be seen in us when we follow Him and allow Him to transform us from glory to glory into the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18). To be transformed into the image of Christ, we need to yield to Him. To bend. To change our direction so that we can reflect the beautiful colours that God wants us to display to the world.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2 (NKJV)
When we allow our minds to be transformed through the power of the Word and Holy Spirit, we will no longer walk in darkness. We no longer conform to the world. We will no longer allow the world and its lures to draw us away from God. His light that gives life to our weary souls will shine through us so that others may see Christ through us and glorify Him.
We are told to let our light shine, and if it does, we won't need to tell anybody it does. Lighthouses don't fire cannons to call attention to their shining—they just shine. D. L. Moody:
Reflection:
Will you yield to Jesus so that His light can shine through you?
Prayer:
Lord, I yield to You. To Your transforming power. Bend me so that the beautiful colours of Your light will shine through me and glorify You In Jesus’ name, amen.
