His Promises Are True
Share
For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. Psalm 33:4 (NIV)
Charles Spurgeon’s intimate time with God in his prayer closet was very evident in the way he prayed in public. When Spurgeon prayed, he did not pray only with his mind. He did not let idle words leave his mouth; he prayed in the power of the Holy Spirit. He also prayed according to the Word of God. Dinsdale T. Young, who had heard Spurgeon pray in public many times, says this:
“His wonderful knowledge of Scripture made his prayers so fresh and edifying. No man can pray with high effect unless he is steeped in Scripture. Mr Spurgeon lived and moved and had his being in the Word of God. He knew its remoter reaches, its nooks and crannies. Its spirit had entered into his spirit, and when he prayed, the Spirit of God brought all manner of precious oracles to his mind.”
Spurgeon not only prayed according to the Word of God, but he also believed in praying Scripture. He believed in proclaiming the promises of God, which is really saying to God: ” This is your promise. Do what You say You will do.”
Take Him at His Word
“God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” Numbers 23:19 (NIV)
God can never renege on His Word. So we can stand on His promises because we know they are true. We know that God is faithful to keep His Word. We know that His promises are "yes" and "amen" in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 1:20). We know that He does not change His mind. We can take Him at His Word.
So is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11 (NIV)
We know that when we proclaim God’s Word as a prayer, it will never return empty. It will always blossom and produce the fruit that God desires. His good fruit and good plans for our lives.
So let us fill our hearts with the promises of Christ. Let them flow from our lips as we trust Him to do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think, through His mighty power at work in us.
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Ephesians 3:20 (NLT)
Reflection:
Will you take Him at His Word when you pray His promises over your life?
Prayer:
Thank You, Lord, that You are faithful to keep Your promises in Your Word. Show me, Lord, how I can better understand Your Word. Help me to memorise them so that I can proclaim them as a prayer over my life whenever I feel overwhelmed. In Jesus’ name, amen.
