Christ our Victor

Outside of Christ, I have been defeated; in Christ, I am already victorious. How meaningful are the words, "in Christ." Watchman Nee
Growing up, I heard and sang many hymns that were written centuries ago. They were to me dusty words that didn’t mean that much. As I got older, the lyrics became more alive, and I learned to appreciate the richness of the text. The words began to resound in my heart, giving me a deeper understanding of what Jesus had done for me on the cross and of the life I have in Him. A life worth living because of the victory He has won for me.
The victory that Christ has won for us is so beautifully captured in the modern-day hymn by Keith and Kristyn Getty, titled, Christus Victor. (Click on the link to watch and listen to it). The hymn is really an anthem of praise to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for the victory He has won over the works of evil. This is what rings out in the very first verse.
“O Most High, King of the ages
Great I AM, God of wonders
By the blood You have redeemed us
Led us through mighty waters
Our strength, our song, our sure salvation.”
When we sing the words to this song, we proclaim our praises to the Most High, the King of the ages. We declare that there is no other God above Him. We declare that He is the most supreme being, the Great I Am, who is able to do miracles for us, His people. We are called His people because Jesus Christ has redeemed us through His blood, having died on the cross for us and risen again in victory.
King of All Kings & Lord of All Lords
John, in His vision, recorded in Revelation 19, sees the vast hosts in heaven singing a song of victory to Jesus Christ. As this vision unfolds, he sees a rider on a white horse named Faithful and True. His eyes are like flames of fire, and He wears many crowns. His robe is dipped in blood, and His title is the Word of God. On his robe and his thigh is written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords. (Revelation 19:11-16). What a powerful image! This is of our victorious King. Our conquering King who sees our struggles and says to us, “I am your Christus Victor, the Victorious One.”
When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. Isaiah 43:2-3 (NLT)
Reflection
Do you find yourself in the deep waters, rivers of difficulty or the fire of oppression? Why not put your trust in your conquering King, Jesus Christ? He is with you.
Prayer
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being my Victorious King. I give you everything that’s overwhelming me at this moment. Take away any doubt in my mind that You are my Conquering King, so that I may believe that You will intervene in my situation as Christus Victor. In Jesus’ name, amen.
