I Need You, Lord

Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18

David, the man God called “a man after my own heart,” lived a life that was marked by many troubles. Perhaps we could say there was never a dull moment in David’s life. As a shepherd boy, he had to fight off lions and bears. As a teenager, he took on the giant Philistine and won. As an adult on the run from Saul, he was attacked on all sides. He was hunted, betrayed, rejected. He experienced fear, despair, desolation. In every situation, David cried out to the Lord. He told Him about the difficult and sometimes desperate situation he was in. He was, in essence, saying, I need You, Lord. I need You to help me out of this particular situation. This is what he says in Psalm 143,

“My enemy has chased me. He has knocked me to the ground and forces me to live in darkness like those in the grave.” Psalm 143:3 (NLT)

He not only tells the Lord about his difficult situation, but also how it makes him feel. In the next verse, he says, I am losing all hope; I am paralysed with fear. Psalm 143:4 (NLT)

But he doesn’t stop there. He surrenders himself to the Lord and asks Him for wisdom. He declares his trust is in Him. In His unfailing love to come and save him.

Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you. Psalm 143:8 (NLT)

Our Expectancy Is From Him

Today, you will have a multitude of tasks to carry out - scheduled and unscheduled. Before you carry out any of your tasks, I would like to invite you to pray – under your breath or out loud, “Lord, I need You.” Then tell him what is happening. Tell Him how you feel. Tell Him you surrender yourself to Him and are trusting His supernatural power to help you.

Tell Him you need Him before you prepare and deliver a presentation for work. Before the next customer walks up to your counter. Before you pick up the phone to help the next caller. Before you help your child with their homework. Before you study for your exams. Before you start a difficult conversation with a family member or friend.

When you do this, you are declaring that your expectancy is from Him, not your own ability and strength. He will honour your declarations and calm your anxious heart. He will give you His supernatural wisdom, strength and courage when you simply say, “I need You, Lord”

For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. Psalm 18:29 (ESV)

Will you take time to tell the Lord that you need Him before you perform any task or face a difficult situation?

Prayer:

Lord. I need You. Help me as I perform the tasks I am scheduled to do today. Help me also with the unexpected ones. I pray for Your supernatural courage, strength and wisdom as I face difficult situations. I trust You and Your unfailing love for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
