His Eye is Upon You
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry. Psalm 34:15 (NKJV)
Keisha and Macon grow up in a low-income neighbourhood with their single mother. When Keisha is seven, their home is burgled, and her mother is murdered while she hides in a cupboard. The traumatic event leaves Keisha emotionally scarred. She loses her ability to speak and carries a pen and notepad to communicate with others. Her brother Macon struggles to make sense of the loss of their mother and becomes rebellious. One night, he takes Keisha with him to steal food from a grocery store. They are caught in the act and run away. As they run away Keisha is run down by a car. The car screeches to a halt, but quickly speeds off. The screeching tyres alert Samantha in the alleyway, who comes to their aid. The events that night were God’s intervention in their lives, taking them on a journey of healing that only He could orchestrate.
Sometimes it’s hard to fathom why we go through difficulties and hardships in life. But what I do know is that no matter what we go through, God watches over us and is with us as we, in our humanness, try to make sense of it all.
The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From his throne he observes all who live on the earth. He made their hearts, so he understands everything they do. Psalm 33:13-15 (NLT)
The psalmist says that God sees every one of us. Just as he saw Samantha, Keisha and Macon in their pain, He sees us. His eye is upon us. He knows our hearts. He understands when we do foolish things in response to our pain. Things that may even harm us.
He Watches Over Us
During my time at Bible school, I received a candle with my name and the words: “His eye is upon you” written in beautiful calligraphy. I still have the candle. Whenever I see it, I am encouraged and reminded of the hymn, His Eye Is on the Sparrow, written by Civilla D. Martin.
Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
When I hear this hymn, it reminds me of the many times God has seen me in my struggles. It reminds me that God is always watching over me.
God sees you, and He is always watching over you. He not only watches over you, but also hears your cries and responds. He comes in the midst of your pain and sorrow, takes hold of your hand and says, “Do not be afraid.”
For I hold you by your right hand - I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you. Isaiah 41:13 (NLT)
Reflection:
Take time to think about the times He watched over you when you were facing hardships and how He came through for you.
Prayer:
Thank You, Lord, for seeing me and watching over me during my struggles and pain. Take away my fears. Help me to trust You to respond to my cries for help. In Jesus’ name, amen.
