The Promised Holy Spirit

The Promised Holy Spirit

Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without wind. We are useless. Charles Spurgeon

As a child, I often sensed God wooing me, calling me to Himself. I remember when I read the Bible, I would have a strong sense of God whispering to me, “I am yours, and you are Mine. This gave me great comfort then and still does today. As a child, I did not yet understand that this was the Holy Spirit coming alongside me, assuring me of God’s presence and comforting me.

Before His crucifixion, Jesus promised His disciples that He would not leave them alone, but would send His promised gift, Holy Spirit, who would abide with them forever.

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17 (NKJ)

The Promise – Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Counsellor

The Greek word for Holy Spirit is paraclete, which is translated as “one who comes alongside,” Helper, Comforter, Advocate, or Counsellor. The Holy Spirit is indeed our Helper who helps us understand the Word so that it resonates in our spirits and becomes alive to us. Holy Spirit helps us by interceding for us. When the weight of the load we carry becomes unbearable, and we cannot find the words to pray, Holy Spirit gives us the “words” that we, in our pain, cannot express ourselves. He is our comforter who comes alongside us in our grief and sorrow. He is our counsellor, the source of supreme and supernatural wisdom when we need discernment and insight to navigate difficult and sensitive situations. As our advocate, Holy Spirit raises the banner of victorious justice when we can no longer fight for ourselves. Holy Spirit is our great Revealer who reveals to us the heart of God for us and for the world.

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. 1 Corinthians 2:9–10

Holy Spirit is the powerful life-giving Spirit that reveals to us the deeper things of God - His treasures, so that we can walk in His power, but also in His gentleness and grace. So that we see life through His lens of vibrant, living colour that we reflect to our world.

I don't want the world to define God for me. I want the Holy Spirit to reveal God to me. A.W. Tozer

Reflection

Are you allowing Holy Spirit to be everything He ought to be in your life? Why not invite Him in?

Prayer

Thank you, Lord, that You did not leave me alone but gave me the precious gift of Holy Spirit. Reveal more of who Holy Spirit is to me so that I may receive His power. Help me to yield to what Holy Spirit wants to do in my life so that I may reflect Your life to the world. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
