God’s Plans – A Yielded Life

He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30 (ESV)

When Billy Graham was at Wheaton College, he went with his class to England. One of the stops on their itinerary was the former home of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church. John Wesley was a key figure in the spiritual revival that took place in the 1700s. As they walked through the house, his professor pointed to two worn-out spots on the carpet next to John Wesley’s bed. This was the spot, the professor explained, where Wesley would pray for hours to God to use him to bring spiritual revival.

When they had finished the tour of the house, the professor noticed that one of the students was missing. So he went back into the house to find the student. When he was about to enter Wesley’s bedroom, he found a young man kneeling in prayer in the same worn-out spot where Wesley used to pray. As the young man was praying, he heard him say, “Do it again, Lord! Do it again… And would you do it again with me?” That young man was Billy Graham.

God’s Power Works Through Us

Billy Graham recognised that God was able to work powerfully through a soul yielded to Him. A soul that was willing to trust a God who could do mighty miracles.

When we understand God’s calling on our lives, we can be sure that God will equip us to do His work. God equipped Billy by opening the door for him to go to college to study theology and anthropology. He equipped him by giving him opportunities to preach the gospel through his work at Youth For Christ.

On our journey to fulfilling God’s calling on our lives, we can be assured that He will equip us. He will lead us in specific ways, sometimes miraculously, so that we can develop the skill set, the gifts and talents we need to accomplish His work. But we have an even greater assurance that where our abilities and strength end, God’s magnificent power will be revealed. He is able, through His mighty power at work in us, to accomplish infinitely more than we can ask or think.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. Ephesians 3:20 (ESV)

This is what He will do when we, just as Billy Graham did, yield to His will. To His calling on our lives. To His power that He wants to unveil in us if we are willing to say, “Do it again. Bring transformation to a broken world through me.” And He will do it again – through you. For His glory.  As we decrease so that He can increase.

Lord, I yield to Your will for my life. Equip me to fulfil Your plans for me. I give You my gifts and talents. I pray that Your power will work mightily through me so that You can accomplish infinitely more than I can ask or think. In Jesus’ name, amen.
