His Sweet Word

His Sweet Word

Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! Psalm 34:8 (NLT)

Towards the end of the 19th century, coin-operated candy slot machines were introduced. They were found in nearly every grocery store or greengrocer, as they were called back then. The machines originally only accepted pennies (one-cent pieces). When a penny was inserted into the slot, there was a slight mechanical delay before the penny dropped into a cash box inside the machine. Once the penny fell into the cash box, a mechanism was triggered that dispensed the candy into an outside chute. This delay between when the penny is inserted and when the candy drops is where we get the popular expression, “The penny dropped.” When we say, “the penny dropped,” we mean the pause – the slow processing time the mind sometimes needs before it fully comprehends something. Before it “clicks,” as it were.

Taste and See

Have you ever read the Word of God and had an epiphany, a revelation concerning a particular verse or portion of scripture? When this happens, the Word comes alive. We gain insight into how we can apply it to a situation in our lives or to our lives in general.  This often happens to me when I ask Holy Spirit to give me wisdom and insight as I read. It’s as if the penny has dropped and I’ve tasted the sweet candy that has dropped into the chute.

The Word of God is sometimes compared to something sweet we can taste. This is what the psalmist says,

“How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103 (NKJV)

The Word of God is indeed sweet when we gain insight and understanding through Holy Spirit. I remember hearing a Muslim convert to Christianity talking about when he first started reading the Word of God. He described the Word as “delicious and yummy.” This is so true. Once we receive revelation about the Word of God, we will keep going back to taste the delicious and yummy food God wants to nourish our souls with. The life-giving food that refreshes our souls. That gives us insight for living. That brings great reward when we obey it (Psalm 19:7-11).

When we allow Holy Spirit to bring revelation, we will develop a hunger, an appetite for God and His Word. We develop a desire for Holy Spirit to teach us about the truth of the Word. To reveal the amazing power of the Word to transform and heal our souls. Holy Spirit is waiting for you to invite Him into your space as you read the Word and meditate on it. He is waiting to drop the “sweet candy” of revelation into your mind. The revelation that will bring joy to your heart as you take refuge in His Word.

Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Proverbs 30:5 (NIV)

Reflection:

Will you be intentional about inviting Holy Spirit to reveal the truth of His Word to you?

Prayer:

Thank You, Lord, for Your Word. I pray that Your Word will be like a sweet taste in my mouth. A taste that I will desire. I pray for greater revelation of Your Word. Show me how to apply it to my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
