Bought At Such a Cost

Bought by Him at such a cost. He will hold me fast. Ada Habershon
For this devotional, we will look at the third stanza and the last two lines of the second stanza, which talk about the price Jesus paid when He died on the cross and the justice of God that was satisfied in Him.
Bought by Him at such a cost. He will hold me fast
For my life He bled and died. Christ will hold me fast
Justice has been satisfied. He will hold me fast
Raised with Him to endless life. He will hold me fast
Till our faith is turned to sight. When he comes at last
The price that Jesus paid when He died on the cross for us is incalculable. Jesus took all our sin and shame upon Himself when He bled and died for us. This is what binds us inextricably to Him when we submit our lives to Him and follow Him. His death and resurrection are the guarantee that He will always hold us fast. The guarantee that He will hold us fast and keep us straying from Him as long as we have our eyes fixed on the cross. The cross that satisfied the justice that was meant for us. God is a just God and cannot betray who He is. Our sinful nature warrants His punishment, but God, in His grace and mercy, made a way for us so that we did not have to bear the brunt of His wrath. He allowed Jesus to bear the wrath so that the punishment meant for us fell on Him. What grace! What mercy! What love!
Crucified With Christ
But it doesn’t end there. through Christ’s resurrection, we have been raised with Him into new life. But the law of reciprocity is at work here. This new life that we have received from Him, we give back to Him. We offer ourselves to Him, we crucify our old nature, and we die to self. We exchange our old nature for His nature because we no longer live, but Christ lives in us. Galatians 2:20 says,
“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
So when we give our lives back to Him, He holds us fast. He holds us in the storm. He holds us when we find ourselves on shaky ground, and our feeble knees want to give in. He holds us when, in our weakness, Satan tempts us to stray from Him. He will hold us until our faith is turned to sight and we are raised to endless life with Him.
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:3
Reflection
Are there things in your life that are holding you back from surrendering your life fully to Him? Take time to write them down and give them to Him so that Christ can fully live in you.
Prayer
Thank You, Lord, that the justice that was meant for me has been satisfied through Christ’s death and resurrection. I surrender my life to You. Help me to exchange my old life for Your new life. Hold me fast in the storm that I am facing. Help me, in my weakness, to stay close to You. Thank You, Lord, that my faith will be turned to sight now in this life and when I am raised to endless life with You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
