Pursuing God – Taste and See
Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! Psalm 34:8 (NLT)
Edith, a wealthy widow, had been fascinated with a mysterious burial mound on her estate in Suffolk, England, since the day she moved there. In the summer of 1939, with war looming, she hires a self-taught archaeologist, Basil Brown, to investigate the site. Brown, who also does work for the British Museum, tries to convince the museum of the immense value of what he believes is under the mound. The British Museum, however, refuses to offer him any help in digging up the site as they are busy excavating the ruins of a Roman villa they deem more important.
Brown develops a passionate obsession with uncovering what is beneath the mound and continues doggedly, despite the many difficulties he encounters during the excavation. As he continues the excavation, he realises the immensity of the discovery – a burial chamber of a king more than a thousand years old. While he is struggling to protect the treasures as they are being revealed, word gets out about the discoveries, and an archaeologist from Cambridge takes over the dig at the order of the British government. The burial mound turns out to be one of the greatest archaeological finds in history, containing priceless gold artefacts.
His Glorious Reflection
Just as Brown’s passionate pursuit was to uncover the earthly treasure he knew was beneath the mound, our passionate pursuit should be to uncover the treasures of God. The treasures of God are eternal and not subject to decay, as were the uncovered artefacts. A passionate pursuit of God starts with a longing to know Him better. It starts with a longing for what Peter calls pure spiritual milk.
Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2-3 (ESV)
When we feed on God’s pure spiritual milk, we feed on His true and unadulterated Word. We develop an insatiable desire to pursue Him. Our appetite for Him is sharpened, while the things of this world become dull and unattractive. Our sharpened appetite allows us to taste and see His immeasurable love for us. The grace that He has lavished upon us. We experience joy in His presence.
As we seek Him and feed on His Word, His pure spiritual milk, the veil is taken away, bringing illumination. Our desire grows to be transformed into His image from glory to glory through Holy Spirit. We become His glorious reflection (2 Corinthians 3:18), which will draw others to Him - even those who are hostile to the gospel.
Complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth. Acute desire must be present, or there will be no manifestation of Christ to His people. He waits to be wanted. A.W. Tozer

Prayer:
Thank You, Lord, for Your spiritual milk. Give me an insatiable desire for Your Word. Help me to walk in step with Your Holy Spirit. Help me pursue You passionately so that I can taste and see that You are good. So that I can draw others to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
